Step into Your Unbound Self

Teaching yoga asks us to be visible.

Whether we are guiding a class, writing a newsletter, posting on social media or speaking about our work, we are continually inviting people to connect with us. For many yoga teachers, that visibility also awakens an old fear of being judged, rejected or not being enough.

In this conversation, Laura Green is joined by author and coach Nicola Humber to explore how we can let go of these patterns and step into a more authentic, unbound version of ourselves.

Why So Many Yoga Teachers Hold Themselves Back

Many people come to yoga teaching because they genuinely want to serve others. Yet that desire to help can sometimes become people pleasing.

This can be described as the “inner good girl”, the part of us that seeks approval, avoids conflict and believes our worth comes from pleasing everyone else. These patterns can quietly shape the way we run our businesses.

They often appear as:

  • Perfectionism and fear of making mistakes.
  • Difficulty charging sustainable prices.
  • Saying yes when we really want to say no.
  • Working excessive hours to feel productive.
  • Holding back our authentic voice through fear of judgement.

Authenticity Builds Stronger Connections

One of the biggest shifts comes from recognising that students do not need perfection.

They connect with honesty.

Rather than hiding mistakes or trying to present a flawless image, allowing yourself to be human often creates deeper trust. Vulnerability, handled with integrity, helps students relate to the person behind the teacher.

The Courage to Be Visible

Showing up authentically means accepting that not everyone will like everything you do.

Whether you are sharing your ideas online, increasing your prices or creating something new, there will always be differing opinions.

The goal is not universal approval. The goal is to build a business that reflects who you truly are rather than who you think you should be.

Meeting Your Unbound Self

Nicola introduces the idea of connecting with your unbound self:

The fullest, freest expression of who you are.

Through meditation and self reflection, we can begin reconnecting with the parts of ourselves that have been hidden through fear, criticism or the need to fit in. Rather than pushing these parts away, we learn to welcome them with curiosity and compassion.

Conclusion

Building a sustainable yoga business is not only about marketing, pricing or strategy.

It is also about having the courage to be seen.

As you become more comfortable expressing your authentic voice, setting healthy boundaries and trusting your own way of teaching, your business becomes a more genuine reflection of who you are. That authenticity is often what allows your students to connect most deeply with both you and your teaching.
