Strengthening the core muscles in the body will improve your posture, help to prevent back pain and is great cross training for other sporting activities. In yoga the core muscles of the body also corresponds with the area called Manipura Chakra, our energetic centre which governs self esteem, courage and confidence so this practise with help to strengthen us in these areas as well.
