05 - 12 October 2024

A journey of a lifetime to Tanzania. Connect to the mesmerising magic of our world through nature immersion, wildlife exploration, yoga and mindful meditation.

Join Laura Green & Anniina Sandberg for a 7-night all-inclusive Yoga & Safari Retreat in Tanzania.

Take a journey there in your mind for a moment . . .

Awaken as dawn breaks, linger a moment and listen to the nature that surrounds you. Roll out of bed and onto the yoga deck as we greet the day with pure wonder in our hearts. We salute the sun with a lakeside view before days of exploration, adventure and mindful moments in nature. In the evening we stretch out from our safari drives with relaxing yoga before gathering for fireside chats and dinner. Oh the conversations we'll have "Did you see that cheetah? What a magical moment."

Laura Green will be your primary host and teacher for this experience. Laura has a great passion for safaris having been on many life-changing trips in Africa and India, even getting married in the middle of a Safari, as well as being a regular volunteer and sponsor for a Cheetah Conservation Centre in South Africa. This retreat is supported by Anniina Sandberg, an Anthropologist & Swahili translator who has spent time living in the Maasai villages we will be visiting.  Anniina owns and runs the travel agency, Visit Natives, which promotes sustainable tourism and creates trips that matter. Visit Natives are handling all our on-the-ground arrangements.

“There is no greater artist than mother nature; no purer magic than a sunrise and sunset; and no more breathtaking a moment than seeing a lion in the wild."

Retreat Overview

Safari Yoga Retreat

We have combined three passions for this trip, soulful yoga, the wildlife of Africa and the Maasai culture. A trip to Tanzania is one the most rewarding holidays you could ever experience. Discover the real magic of Tanzania, amazing wildlife, golden savanna and daily yoga in a luxury eco-lodge on the edge of a lake. The trip is full of fascinating adventures into local culture, African art, and traditional safari experiences. We spend one day in a Maasai village, where we get to know the life of Maasai women. Another afternoon is dedicated to Tanzanian Tinga tinga art, where we'll visit the village of Mto Wa Mbu to participate in a local artist's art workshop.

Safari Drives

Our retreat includes two amazing full-day safari drives in the Ngorongoro Crater and Tarangire National Park. The Ngorongoro Crater is one of the Seven Wonders of Africa and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. We'll begin early and adventure out in our Safari jeeps as the sun rises and the Savanna begins to awaken. With a picnic breakfast & lunch we'll make every second count as we look for wild animals from elephants, to African buffaloes and lions. We'll also experience a night game drive in Lake Manyara National Park and a walking safari which is great for bird spotting.

Yoga & Meditation

Our yoga schedule will work around the Safari drives with 1 - 2 classes/day plus meditation sessions, and fireside ceremonies. From our yoga platform you can look out over the lake and listen to the sounds of nature all around. As our luxury lodge is surrounded by waterbuck, baboons, mongoose, genet, and hundreds of bird species that visit every day. Thanks to the position of the lodge up on the escarpment, there are very few mosquitoes and the higher altitude makes for a pleasant temperature for outside yoga. A backup indoor space is also available should we need it.

Accommodation on your Yoga Safari Retreat

Lake Manyara Safari Eco-Lodge

After landing at Kilimanjaro International Airport, we take a 3-hour drive into the African bush, where will settle in for 7 nights at our eco-safari Lake Manyara Lodge. The Lodge has an intimate and luxurious feel.

The lodge is located in the middle of nature in the highlands region right next to Lake Manyara. From all around the lodge there are wonderful views directly to Lake Manyara National Park. The lodge's swimming pool has breathtaking views of Lake Manyara National Park, which Ernest Hemingway called the most beautiful lake in Africa. The weather is perfect in October as it is pleasantly warm with a gentle breeze.  A typical day ranges from a high of 28°C to a low of 14°C with low chances of rain. Thanks to the position of the lodge up on the escarpment, there are very few mosquitoes in this area but lions, hyenas, leopards, elephants, and buffalo are regular visitors to the lodge. Often heard at night, they are a key feature for animal-loving guests that want a wilderness wow factor.

Immersed in Nature

The spacious suite-style rooms have a choice of large double or twin beds, each fully furnished with private ensuite bathrooms, seating areas, writing desks and their own wooden decks. Every accommodation unit at the lodge is designed with privacy in mind so you can relax and unwind from your day in an intimate quiet setting.

The lodge also has a swimming pool, restaurant and bar and a beautiful yoga deck looking out over the lake. You can relax outside by the open fire or admire the green scenery from your private deck.

Our retreat is full board with healthy and locally produced food. Start your morning with freshly squeezed juice, exotic fruits, granola, or an omelette prepared by the chef according to your wishes. On the excursion days, we enjoy an excursion lunch in the wonderful African nature, and in the evening we are spoiled with a multi-course dinner. The retreat chef can cater for all dietary requirements including vegetarian and vegan. This retreat does not include alcohol but there is a hotel bar should you wish to indulge.

Visit Three National Parks for an Exceptional Experience

Tarangire National Park

Our first safari drive is in Tarangire National Park. In the middle of the park flows the Tarangire River, where animals gather to drink all year round. Tarangire is especially known for the successful work of the park rangers to eradicate elephant poaching, which is why the park today has the largest elephant population in Tanzania. The park is famous for three things in particular. Baobab – that is, from monkey bread trees, herds of elephants and tree-climbing lions. In addition to large mammals such as elephants, lions, zebras, wildebeests, giraffes and water antelopes, Tarangire is a paradise for bird watchers. There are almost 600 species of birds.

Ngorongoro Conservation Area

Our second safari drive is in Ngorongoro Conservation Area and Crater which is one of the world's most unique nature reserves. The Ngorongoro Crater is considered one of the Seven Natural Wonders of Africa, and for good reason it is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Ngorongoro is a great place to see such wonderful volcanic landscapes and is also home to “big 5” game (elephant, lion, leopard, buffalo, rhino). Huge herds of wildebeests and zebras traverse its plains during their annual migration. Livestock belonging to the semi-nomadic Maasai tribe graze alongside wild animals.

Lake Manyara National Park

Our retreat home for the week, plus an evening safari drive is in Lake Manyara National Park region which is well known for its elephant population and tree-climbing lions as well as it's very unusual soda ash lake that attracts thousands of pink flamingos, and breathtaking scenery! There is also an amazing canopy walk that gradually rises in height and extends for over 360 meters offering you an opportunity to walk through the verdant tree top of the forest and see some of the unique wildlife including birds and monkeys.

Cultural Experiences

Day 4 & 5 of our retreat are dedicated to immersive cultural experiences. We spend time with the Maasai people and get to know their unique nomadic culture and the everyday life of a Maasai woman. Usually, tourists visit Maasai villages (cultural boma), which are built specifically for tourists. We get a more unique opportunity to visit a real Maasai boma, where our guide Anniina lived while doing her Anthropological fieldwork. Here we are not tourists, but guests who are already expected to visit. We return to the lodge for dinner, where we share the day's experiences. Another afternoon is dedicated to Tanzanian Tinga tinga art, where we'll visit the village of Mto Wa Mbu to participate in a local artist's art workshop.

Travel Arrangments

Our retreat begins at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO), Tanzania. We'll recommend which flights to book from the UK. There are no direct flights to Kilimanjaro from the UK. we will be changing in Qatar before getting our connecting flight to Kilimanjaro. It will be important that our group travel together on the same outbound flight to fit with our onward travel. You may want to extend your stay at the end though, as the beautiful beaches of Zanzibar are close or maybe you fancy visiting Mount Kilimanjaro itself.

We recommend budgeting £1,200 for your flight but this may fluctuate. As soon as the flight become available to book we will inform you so that you can book early for the best price. Once at Kilimanjaro International Airport, you'll be collected for our 3-hour drive to Lake Manyara National Park. Please note the cost of flights is not included in the retreat. Upon booking this retreat we'll supply more information about travelling in Tanzania such as visas, travel vaccinations and more. We really are here to make sure you have the best time on your travel adventure.
